We do this in order to determine the extent to which, from a parental perspective, the agency ascribed to Mapuche-Pewenche children impacts the language policies in each family and the transmission of their indigenous language, Chedungun. We conclude by suggesting that, even though agency and autonomy are present in the way the children in these families are socialized, when it comes to determining the sociolinguistic future of these children, parents appear to assume the main role as agents of language policy. Some of these groups, made up mainly of young people, choose to act outside the state, rejecting state language policies outright, while others take advantage of the funding options and symbolic recognition that officialdom offers them. Based on the review of two cases that we consider representative of both positions, the Quechua for All project and the Puriyninchik Association, we propose that the relationship with the State constitutes a relevant axis for observing Latin American language activism, and we examine the challenges and possibilities faced by the collectives as they move along these paths. Language policy scholarship through the past decades, whether top-down or bottom-up, also registers that many minority speakers intend to preserve or reclaim their languages as active agents through everyday interactions and the transmission of the language within the home or in the community despite these external pressures. Based on Stroud’s (2018) analytical framework of ‘sociolinguistic citizenship’ that investigates questions of power, ideology, legitimacy and marginalisation, this paper examines the multifarious layers between governmental language policies and how they are interpreted, implemented or negotiated by a wide range of social actors (e.g., parents, students, teachers, activists), revealing ideological spaces for the use or non-use of Galician, an official minority language spoken in a bilingual community of northwestern Spain. Using various qualitative research tools, including field observations, interviews and focus groups, we demonstrate how these actors become policy intermediaries on the ground and argue that their under-the-radar participation in the policy discourse may appear extremely intermittent and ad hoc, but their microcosmic interrogation of the dominant Castilian discourse through individual actions, when translates into collective mobilisations can lead to bottom-up language policies. We argue that these strategies are built up collectively by dubbing teams, in a particularly productive way during seasons 2 to 15. To test this hypothesis, we gathered a corpus of arbitrarily selected episodes between seasons 1 and 23, and performed a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the culturemes observed in the dubbing process. Results show the emergence of a distinctive speech form compared to other Latino and neutral dubbing styles: Springfield Spanish. This specific voice, a product of the agency distributed among the members of the dubbing team, was lost when it was replaced in 2005, thus showing its singular and situated nature. Juan Eduardo Bonnin Carlos Alejandro Uncal Copyright (c) 2023 Boletín de Filología 2023-12-22 2023-12-22 58 2 129 163 Pronominalization, agency and identity: the (in) visibilisation of agency in the narrative discourse of single mothers in Mexico City https://ultimadecada.uchile.cl/index.php/BDF/article/view/73268 From a critical-discursive perspective and using the narrative as a unit of analysis, in this article I show some linguistic strategies with which a socially discriminated group, such as Mexican single mothers, negotiates its identity, protects its face and resists dominant discourses. The strategies we focus on are the pronominalization of yo; the use of tú without a pronoun in a collective sense; and the use of the marked gender of the pronouns nosotras and una. Through different narrative extracts, elicited in semi-directed interviews with six single mothers, I illustrate the functions that these linguistic elements fulfill. The results show that pronominalization has an agentive function that is part of a face-work (Brown and Levinson 1987); the second person singular without a pronoun is a face-protecting strategy, while the use of marked gender has a differentiating function. This analysis shows that it is essential to consider the complete communicative situation in which the narratives arise in order to assign meaning to the use of such linguistic strategies. Alba N. The main focus is on the narratives of the mothers and the decisions they make in their daily lives. This ethnographic study explores the case of four Spanish-speaking immigrant mothers (two Centroamerican and two European) in Finland. The data is analyzed using nexus analysis (Scollon y Scollon 2004). As active agents, migrant mothers work a lot in their daily lives to foster the linguistic socialization of their children. In the narratives of this research’s data, three main discourses can be identified: 1) the discourse on daily activities, 2) the discourse on social contacts and 3) the discourse of linguistic awareness. Based on the assumption that identities are contextual, relational and partial (Bucholz and Hall 2005), this exploratory study analyzes how pupils, using their agency, position themselves in relation to Spanish as a heritage language in class. The study shows the importance of taking contextual factors into account in the analysis of the forms of agency that can occur in the context of institutionalized heritage language learning. It also contributes to studies of language policies that include the attitudes and agencies of adolescents in order to understand the complexities of language maintenance and change processes in times of transnationalism and globalization. Vigh’s (2009) notion of social navigation allowed me to bring together the ways in which the various contributors capture the discursive and practical agency displayed by the studied social actors in each site. Even though most of the researchers draw on the concept of ‘agency’, as introduced by Ahearn (2001), in order to analyse their data, some of them invoke other definitions to capture different forms of agency: individual but also collective. The methodological decisions made by most of the contributors prove that qualitative procedures and methods continue to be those most suitable for capturing the complexities around what counts as ‘agentive actions and agentive discourses’ in the various studied contexts. It is only by interacting with the participants of our research and spending time with them during our fieldwork that we can make sense of the life stories they recount and the decisions they make under the particular circumstances in which they (try to) live. Condolences, however, are among the least addressed out of them. Bibliography on this subject is scarce if compared to that of petitions, promises, offers, and so on, more so in Spanish, where papers on this subject are few and far between. This gap is especially notable in diachronic studies. This paper aims to offer a first approach to strategies for delivering condolences in 18th and 19th century letters written in the Canary Islands, Spain. Its goal is to describe which are the most common semantic formulas used to give condolences, and how much they resemble those described by different authors regarding this speech act in modern languages. Another important gap is what refers to greater attention to the problems presented in writing at the level of primary and superior education, leaving studies and explorations of said ability in secondary education. The present investigation accounts for a descriptive, quantitative and qualitative study, which shows the most frequent errors in the use of commas committed by second-year high school students. The study follows the methodological guidelines of corpus linguistics and technology-assisted error analysis. The sample is made up of students from four educational establishments of the Biobío Region. For the compilation of the corpus, students were asked to produce three texts in different instances in the context of the Language and Literature course. Subsequently, these were digitized, labeled, processed computationally, and analyzed to identify the frequency of errors and their context of appearance. The results show that the most frequent type of error made by the students was the omission of commas. This omission was manifested in the presence of conjunctions, discursive markers and connectors, linguistic resources that explicitly relate textual segments, establishing various types of semantic relationships between them. The lack of commas in front of conjunctions is alarming to verify at the high school level, since they are invariable structures that establish relationships between words, syntactic groups or sentences, which do not allow mobility within the statement, which implies that they should be easily recognizable by who writes. J. Dominguez https://ultimadecada.uchile.cl/index.php/BDF/article/view/73295 Ramón Joaquín Domínguez’s National Dictionary was the first encyclopedic dictionary of Spanish and had a great diffusion and repercussion in its time (and even in later lexicography). The starting point of the study is the biographical article on Ramón Joaquín Domínguez that appears in the first edition of this work with the date of his death (1848, a later date than the one that has been handled until the time of publication of the dictionary, 1846- 47). This article is lemmatized with the letter R for Ramón and not with the letter D for Domínguez, as would have been expected, which would indicate that the National Dictionary was published in installments and that the author could not participate in the closing work of the dictionary, which, possibly, was finalized by the collaborators who had worked together with the author throughout the process of elaborating the work. To verify this idea, we start by examining the periodical press of the time, since it offers valuable information about the process of writing and publishing the National Dictionary, which results, therefore, in a better understanding of the history of Spanish lexicography of the 19th century. Based on the data obtained through surveys and interviews, it can be affirmed that the vitality of the paisa voseo will continue to exist because the people of Medellin, although they consider the voseo a provincial term, do not stop using it, since they do not mind being evaluated as provincials due to their humble and proud character. Thus, the voseo will continue to be the identity symbol of the paisa group. For this purpose, the work is based on PRESEEA materials from the high educational level of Seville´s citizens, which in made of semi-structured surveys recollected between 2012 and 2014. The results have been obtained through a quantitative study of the data and after a application of stadistic correlations and logistic regression analyses in order to observe the influence of the independent variables in the pronunciation of the /s/ implosive consonant when all the factors act simultaneously. The aim of this paper is to analyze what linguistic and social factors influence the production of the different articulatory variants of the phoneme /s/ (sibilance, aspiration, elisión, assimilation and aspiration with assimilation). The results show that the aspirated allophone [h] is the most frequent variant, reaching the highest percentages, followed by the elision, which contrasts with the results obtained in others linguistic communities of Andalusia (e.g.: Málaga, Jaén, Granada) where it is observed that the most used variant is the elision. Traditionally, it has been considered that the nucleus concentrates the greatest load of information within the sentence. Although this segment is, without a doubt, of extreme importance when approaching F0, it has also been seen that the prenucleus presents certain patterns that can help to better understand how sociolinguistic variables influence prosody. Our analysis takes two diatopic varieties which are close to each other, both geographically and historically, as well as regarding intonation: Cuban and Venezuelan Spanish. In previous works it has been highlighted that both varieties hold a close similarity in the nucleus of the sentence. We intend to determine if the behaviour of the PMx1 establishes differences between them, as well as diaphasic differences by alternating the speech register used (laboratory speech and semi-spontaneous speech). We use a psychoacoustic threshold of 1.5 St (Rietveld & Gussenhoven 1985; Pamies et al. 2002) and the Autosegmental-Metrical model as stated in Dorta et al. (2013) and in Dorta and Díaz (2018). Furthermore, we approach the possible interrelation between overshooting and other intonation indices (duration and intensity). Through the exhumation and analysis of documents scattered in various media and repositories, we reconstruct a decisive period for this subfield’s configuration in one of the main national universities in Argentina. The Institute of Philology from the Universidad Nacional del Litoral was founded in 1952 and the subject Linguistics began to be taught in the Letters’ degree. The first direction of the Institute did not advance in the objectives initially declared for the center, that aimed to study the local varieties of Spanish. These initial goals were not pursued, but the Institute did lay the foundations for the further development of that area and sustained the training of human resources for more than a decade. 1966-1967 a series of factors converged to give rise to a greater specialization and diversification of the subfield, starting with the establishment of spaces dedicated to dialectology. María Sol Pérez Corti Lucila Santomero Copyright (c) 2023 Boletín de Filología 2023-12-22 2023-12-22 58 2 423 454 Translation techniques on the version in the Spanish language of the Latin treatise Oronce Finé’s De Geometria https://ultimadecada.uchile.cl/index.php/BDF/article/view/73306 Oronce Finé composed in 1532, as result of the teaching program at the Collège Royal, his work Protomathesis: opus varium, a quadripartite mathematical compendium about practical arithmetic, theoretical and practical geometry, cosmography and gnomonics. Precisely the second book, De geometria, was translated into the Spanish language, Los dos libros de la geometría práctica de Oroncio Fineo Delfinate, [...] traducidos de latín en lengua española, in 1553, by Jerónimo Girava and Pedro Juan de Lastanosa. Based on the collation of both texts, the Latin original and the Spanish translation, this work analyzes the characteristics of the Spanish treatise and describes the translation techniques used by the translators in its textual formulation, which represents the first version made since Latin into a Romance language. Although, principally, the translators opt for an literally translation, the testimonials reflect the restructuring of the contents and, with them, the semantic amplitude, thanks to the use of different types of paraphrases and circumlocutions. Furthermore, they translate the Latinisms or recreate these with a gloss or binomial expressions to convey the meaning, but they also copy the Latinisms or translate the Greek voices, when these are terminologically appropriated. Specifically, we focused on pointing out the main discursive values found in the sample and their diastratic distribution. After the analysis we could verify that these reformulators acquired different roles, such as: to specify a previous information by adding data or examples (explanatory function); to express a synthesis or conclusion, sometimes with modal nuances (recapitulatory function); or to totally or partially correct what was previously said (rectificatory function). In addition, the correlation with social variables revealed some interesting trends, such as the more widespread use among women of bueno, both recapitulative and rectifying; the greater presence of explanatory o sea in the first age groups and of the recapitulative bueno among the youngest subjects; and the concentration of most uses of es decir and en fin for these two functions among older speakers and those with more educational attainment level.
