Abstract

One of the most important activities of the majority of the manufacturing companies in the automotive sector in Mexico is materials management. Sub-assemblies, components, parts and raw materials have to be managed carefully, due to their impact on product costs and manufacturing times. The Material Requirements Planning (“MRP”) tool is used for this by programming the net needs of all the intermediate parts that make up a certain article. This paper presents the case of how MRP is employed for the methodological development of materials supply of a company in the automotive sector located in the State of Puebla, Mexico. It is a supplier of seat supports and must achieve a correct balance of its inventory by knowing the exact quantity it has to produce and having real-time knowledge of the inventory situation and the decisions that have to be made. The 4-stage methodology for the application of the MRP was therefore developed, contemplating activities such as a diagnosis of the logistics process, sales forecasts, Bills Of Materials (BOMs) of product items and feeds of material structures in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Aspel PROD 4.0., among others. Thanks to these systematic actions, the supply of materials throughout the organization was improved and the decision-making processes were facilitated, using sales projections and inventory availability for the production of future orders and deliveries precisely according to the needs of the auto parts supplier.
