Abstract

This article is a reflection on the importance of an internship abroad (Italy) and its contributions in the academic training process, during the doctoral period in Brazil, with emphasis on the current mental health scenario. It is the result of the experience of an occupational therapist, with participation in the Sandwich Program Abroad (PDSE), funded by the Science without Borders Program (CsF) of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), developed in the Department di Philosophy, Scienze Sociali, Umane and Della Formazione of the Università Degli Studi di Perugia-Italy. This stage occurred in the period from February 1, 2015 to July 31, 2015, for a total of six months, with the researcher's immersion in the mental health services of the city of Perugia, in the region of Umbria, in order to know how the city's mental health network is organized and how mental health care is given. Throughout the course, it was possible to participate in seminars related to the theme "mental health", anthropology classes and daily follow-up of mental health services, always in contact with teachers, professionals and users of the respective services. However, this practical experience in Umbria allowed a review and revision of some data to be worked on in the partial analysis of this doctoral thesis, with the help and contribution of anthropology on the valuation and approach of some aspects of daily life of the users of mental health services.
