Assistive technology for students with cerebral palsy: Development and collaborative Analysis Between occupational therapists and teachers

Assistive Technology holds an interdisciplinary characteristic: occupational therapists often join educators to propose strategies intended to correct barriers imposed to students with cerebral palsy. However, there is a lack of bibliography regarding interdisciplinarity between those professionals, in the process of development and analysis Assistive Technology. The aim of present research was to present the service, strategies, methodology and Assistive Technology products, developed for students with cerebral palsy, through the collaboration between occupational therapists and teachers; as well as to present teacher’s perception regarding their effectiveness. Two teachers participated, and their respective students with cerebral palsy. Data were collected in early childhood schools, located in a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Procedures followed six interventional stages based on the school collaborative consulting model. Results show the importance of occupational therapist and teachers working together in selecting, developing and analyzing Assistive Technology resources. The interdisciplinary proposal may be found throughout the process, where Assistive Technology resources provided functionality to the students and a more active role in learning process and social interactions.
