Author Guidelines

Scope and Editorial Policy:

The Revista de Sociología is published twice a year by the University of Chile’s Department of Sociology and seeks to create a space for communication of knowledge concerning the many research problems of interest to the social sciences. As such, the journal encourages diverse theoretical, methodological, intra-, inter- and transdisciplinary perspectives that may offer a contribution to our knowledge of social matters, and aims to foster academic debate and reflection on the current and future state of Chilean society and Latin American societies in general.

The Revista de Sociología therefore publishes original theoretical essays and academic works based on empirical research which constitute a contribution to these aspects of the social sciences.

Originality:

All work submitted for publication must be original. Only works that have not been published previously in other journals, periodicals, books, proceedings or other publications (with or without DOI/ISBN) will be considered for publication.

Furthermore, only original works which contribute meaningfully to the literature and which are structured as a theoretical essay or an empirical research article will be considered for publication. As such, the Revista de Sociología will not publish:

- Translations of articles published previously in another language.

- Book critiques, reviews or commentaries.

- Interviews with authors or other figures.

- Opinion columns.

Articles based on, for example, undergraduate or postgraduate theses may be published provided that the submitted work is not an exact copy of the thesis – it must be a separate product in article form.

All submissions are assessed using the Turnitin platform (http://turnitin.com) in order to identify potential similarities with other publications resulting from plagiarism, self-plagiarism or duplicate publication. In the event that a substantial match (greater than 20%) is detected, the Revista de Sociología reserves the right to automatically reject the submission. Any authors involved in the creation of a work that fails to comply with this requirement may be sanctioned by the journal and forbidden from making further submissions for a period of three years. In addition, the journal reserves the right to apply further sanctions in accordance with the guidelines set out by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Language of publication:

The Revista de Sociología publishes articles written in Spanish or English.

Submission Deadline:

 Submissions to the Revista de Sociología remain open throughout the year. These must be sent via email to revsoc@facso.cl and publication will be subject to positive evaluation by our approved specialists.

Evaluation and Peer Review:

Documents submitted to the Revista de Sociología are evaluated by the editorial team and, assuming compliance with editorial policy and guidelines, will be sent for evaluation by two peer reviewers who are experts in the manuscript's subject matter and study methods. In the event of a discrepancy between the evaluations, the opinion of a third reviewer may be requested.

A double-blind peer review process is used in which the authors’ identities will not be revealed to the peer reviewers, and vice versa. This avoids potential problems of bias in the evaluation process and encourages sincere and constructive dialogue between researchers, ultimately resulting in an improved final product and promoting scientific progress. 

GUIDELINES FOR PRESENTATION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Important: Documents that do not comply with the following structure, formatting and citation guidelines will be returned to their authors.

The Revista de Sociología welcomes two types of work for publication: empirical research articles and theoretical articles or essays.

(a) Empirical research articles are original works derived from research involving systematic analysis of primary or secondary data using qualitative, quantitative or mixed research techniques. Although the main focus of such works is on the results of data analysis, it is hoped that the research will include significant theoretical content which will shape research decisions, at least with regard to conceptual definitions and study hypotheses. Empirical research articles must adhere to the following rigid structure:

• Title page: this must contain the title of the manuscript (maximum 12 words), author details (name, institutional affiliation, institutional email address and ORCID code), and information about sources of financing (if applicable).
• Abstract: an abstract in Spanish and English (maximum 150 words each) and five key words in Spanish and English.
• Introduction: a description of the principal theoretical, empirical and/or methodological aspects of the study. Subheadings may be used in this section as required.
• Method: a description and justification of the tools and techniques used in the study. Information should be provided concerning selection of participants (description of participants, sampling method), data collection (instruments), data analysis, and ethical aspects of the study.
• Results: a description of the main results of the study with reference to the research questions, objectives or hypotheses.
• Conclusions: a discussion of the main findings of the study with regard to the questions, objectives or hypotheses proposed, as well as in relation to the theoretical foundations upon which the study was based. Additionally, the limitations of the study should be acknowledged, and future lines of research proposed based on the findings.
• References: a comprehensive list of the sources used in the research and cited in the body of the text. References must be formatted according to the English version of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), seventh edition.

 The corpus of the document (with the exception of the title page) should not contain any information which may identify the authors, their institutional affiliation or their funding sources. Empirical research articles must be no longer than 8,000 (eight thousand) words including references, tables and annexes (if applicable).

(b) Theoretical articles or essays are original works which (a) reflect upon a theory relating to the social sciences and/or associated disciplines; (b) discuss from an innovative perspective two or more theories relating to the social sciences and/or associated disciplines; or (c) offer a novel approach to a social phenomenon according to the author’s own theoretical innovation or based on theories from other authors. This type of work should include a thesis or hypothesis around which the content is organised. Unlike empirical research articles, theoretical articles or essays are not required to follow a rigid structure. However, they should at least incorporate the following sections:

• Title page: this must contain the title of the manuscript (maximum 12 words), author details (name, institutional affiliation, institutional email address and ORCID code), and information about sources of financing (if applicable).
• Abstract: an abstract in Spanish and English (maximum 150 words each) and five key words in Spanish and English.
• Introduction: a brief description of the principal theoretical aspects, propositions or hypotheses of the essay.
• Development: elaboration on the main propositions, hypotheses or arguments of the essay. The title of this section may be changed, and subheadings may be used as required.
• Conclusions: a summary of the theoretical discussion with regard to the propositions, hypotheses or arguments. The potential limitations of the work should be acknowledged, and future lines of research proposed.
• References: a comprehensive list of the sources used in the research and cited in the body of the text. References must be formatted according to the English version of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), seventh edition.

The corpus of the document (with the exception of the title page) should not contain any information which may identify the authors, their institutional affiliation or their funding sources. Theoretical articles or essays must be no longer than 5,000 (five thousand) words including references and annexes (if applicable).

Manuscript Submission:

Manuscripts should be sent via email to the Editor of the Revista de Sociología (revsoc@facso.cl) and the author will receive confirmation of receipt within a week. Unfortunately, emails sometimes do not reach their intended recipients, and we therefore request that you resubmit your work if confirmation is not received within this time frame.

The authors should send three Microsoft Word documents containing the following information:

• The “Title Page”. This document must contain the title of the manuscript (maximum 12 words), author details (name, institutional affiliation, institutional email address and ORCID code), and information about sources of financing (if applicable).
• The “Manuscript Body”. This should not include any information which could be used to identify the author(s). The document should be set in 12 point single-spaced Times New Roman font.
• Cover letter addressed to the Editor of the Revista de Sociología clearly explaining the issue that the manuscript addresses and why the authors think it would be of interest to the journal’s readership. The cover letter should include confirmation that the document complies with the originality, formatting, citation and ethical guidelines for authors (please see below).

ETHICAL GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

In the cover letter, the corresponding author must declare on behalf of all of the manuscript’s authors that:

1. The manuscript has not been published previously, nor is it undergoing review by another journal or publishing house. 

2. The manuscript has been reviewed and approved in its entirety by all of the authors, and these assume full responsibility for its content. 

3. All contributions to the creation of the manuscript are explicitly acknowledged in the form of a list of bibliographical sources and credits to the authors. 

4. All of the authors are aware that the Revista de Sociología will evaluate the document to identify potential issues of plagiarism via the TurnitIn platform. In the event that evidence of commonality with any previously published and unreferenced document is found, the submission will be rejected automatically. 

5. The research process employed in the study has ensured compliance with ethical criteria in the production and/or gathering of information (e.g., the data have not been falsified, ethical standards and protocols were adhered to during the study through, for example, the signing of informed consents, etc.), as well as in the processing and storage of same. The authors also confirm their awareness of the possibility that the Revista de Sociología may request additional materials during the editorial evaluation process. 

6. If the manuscript contains images or figures taken from other previously published works, the authors must attach a document confirming that reproduction rights have been granted to them. 

7. If the manuscript contains photographs, these must be the property (or creations) of the authors of the work. If the photographs show the faces of persons above the age of 18 years, the authors must attach documentation confirming that these individuals provided their informed consent and express authorisation for the publication of the photographs in scientific journals. In the absence of such authorisation, the work will not be published. If the photographs show the faces of persons below the age of 18 years, the authors must attach documentation confirming that the photographs were obtained with the informed consent of the legal guardians of the minors in question, as well as their express authorisation for the publication of the photographs in scientific journals. The authors must also attach documentation confirming that the minors in question gave their consent to be photographed, along with follow-up documentation from ethics committees. The documentation presented by the authors will be assessed by the Editorial Board who may request the opinion of an Ethics Committee before reaching a decision as to the relevance of publishing these images.

8. A record of the study data (e.g., databases, technical documents, etc.) will be kept for a minimum period of three years. The authors are also aware that this information may be requested by the editors of the Revista de Sociología during the evaluation process.

FORMATTING AND CITATION GUIDELINES

The Revista de Sociología follows the guidelines set down in the English version of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), seventh edition. Authors must adhere to these requirements when creating citations and references, and when structuring the results. Some examples of the guidelines detailed in the manual are provided below.

In-text citations: Neither footnotes nor endnotes should be used to provide bibliographical references. Citations should appear between parentheses in the body of the text and indicate the surname of the author and the year of publication. References to authors should be made using neutral language, ideally in the third person and in a way which does not disclose the gender, ethnicity, nationality or profession of the author. Examples:

• Many authors (Gutiérrez & Araya, 2018; Pérez, 2000) have suggested...
• Both Gutiérrez and Araya (2018) and Pérez (2000) have suggested…

In-text direct quotations: These should be avoided wherever possible and content should be paraphrased instead. If absolutely necessary, direct quotations should not exceed 40 words and should be presented between quotation marks along with an indication of the document and page number from which the reference was taken. Examples:

• …thus “politics in the strict sense of the term refers not to men, but to the world that exists between them” (Arendt, 1995, p. 154).
• …Thus, according to Arendt (1995) “politics […] refers not to men, but to the world that exists between them” (p. 154).

Footnotes and endnotes: As a general rule, the Revista de Sociología does not permit the use of footnotes or endnotes. Information should be incorporated into the text if relevant and deleted if not. In exceptional circumstances, the Revista de Sociología may permit the use of a maximum of two footnotes provided that this is justified adequately by the authors.

Numerical information: A period or full stop should be used as decimal separator (e.g., “2.6% of respondents”). A comma should be used as thousand separator (e.g., “the study sample included 1,234 people). Decimal statistics that cannot be greater than 1 should be reported without the leading zero (r = .3), while those which can be greater than 1 should be reported with the zero (Sd = 0.3).

Use of tables: Tables should be presented in editable format (not inserted as an image) within the body of the document. They should be created according to APA guidelines using only horizontal black rulings above and below the column title row and below the last row of the table. Please refer to examples at:

Use of figures: All graphical information, photographs and maps must be labelled as figures. All figures included in the manuscript must be referenced in the text. For example:

“As shown in Figure 1, increases in...”

Figures should be constructed using a black, white and grey colour scheme in order to ensure comprehension when printed in black and white. The title of a figure should not appear within the figure itself. Text contained within a figure should be kept to a minimum. If text must be included (e.g., words or numbers), ensure that this information is clearly legible. Figures containing illegible text will not be accepted. Figures included in the document must be the property (or creations) of the authors of the manuscript. If a figure is used which has been published previously, the original source must be referenced and a document must be attached confirming the express authorisation by the owner of the copyright to reproduce the figure in question. In the absence of such authorisation, the figure must be removed.

List of references: The list of references should include all of the documents used in the creation of the text, as well as the sources of any quoted text. The list should be constructed according to APA guidelines. Examples:
