Perception of Education Students About the Benefits of Meditation in the Context of a Pandemic

Authors

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic in Chile forced universities to carry out their functions remotely, which meant a work and emotional overload for students, teachers and administrative staff. In this context, the Differential Education program at the University of Viña del Mar (UVM) implemented a series of meditation sessions for its students. The objective of the study presented in this article was to investigate the perception of students about the regular meditative practice experienced in a given subject and its impact on learning. A qualitative approach methodology with phenomenological design was chosen. The data collection was developed through a semi-structured interview with six students who practiced meditation, who also participated in a focus group. On the other hand, five teachers from the same career also participated in a focus group. The main findings allow us to affirm that the implementation of the meditation developed during the classes caused benefits in the students, since -according to their statements and those of their teachers- a better disposition towards learning was achieved, despite the adverse health context. in which the sessions took place.
