Abstract

Through a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in a Children´s Home in Chile during the first semester of 2014, there were studied occupational performance factors and components of twenty-one children institutionalized for violation of their rights was carried out between zero months and five years 11 months. Three observation instruments were used: each child’s Clinical Record, an adapted Guide to Observation and Assessment of the Educational Environment, and the “Test de Evaluación del Desarrollo Infantil”, a child development assessment test. The results are grouped in: characterization of the causes of admission, description of the associated health conditions, possibilities offered by the residence environment and the evaluation of occupational performance skills. The causes of admission were: parents’ negligence (55%), parental drug use (45%) and / or role incompetence (40%). Participation in activities conducive to occupational achievement was limited by acute and chronic respiratory diseases in 65% of cases. Regarding performance in performance skills, inferred from “Test de Evaluación del Desarrollo Infantil” results, it was observed that 38% of the children presented risk or delay in motor, cognitive and language development; And 23% had delays in the socio-emotional area. This characterization allows identifying those situations that deserve attention on the part of the institutions and professionals to contribute in the approach of this problematic, demonstrating the usefulness of the evaluations used, to study the situation of other children in similar conditions.
