Abstract

The study analyzes the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation, consumption and criminality in young people from marginalized areas of Mexico City. This study questions the hypothesis that economic deprivation and high consumption expectations are determinants of delinquency. Based on data collected from a survey, it was revealed that the majority of participants do not experience any significant trouble satisfying basic needs, nor give great importance to luxury consumption. No high levels of frustration or tendency to get goods illegally were observed; the results, therefore, challenge the supposedly direct relation between socioeconomic deprivation and criminal tendencies, suggesting the need for more integral approaches to understand these dynamics.
