Abstract

This article presents findings from fieldwork on solidarity practices and the production of otherness in an international baccalaureate, within the framework of a broader study on elite schools in Argentina. Through participant observation and interviews, the participation of students as volunteers in an institution for “homeless men” is described, in order to analyze their experiences of these “social others” in relation to different modes of production of otherness: affective, meritocratic and political. It concludes by pointing out, as a comparative finding with previous research, that the encounter with "others" leads to an understanding based more on diversity, affectivity, and meritocracy than on a political critique of inequality.
